After graduation from Woodrow Wilson in 1958, I took secretarial classes at Beckley College. In September of 1959, I left Beckley and went to live in Washington, DC. I worked at the C&P Telephone Company as a telephone operator and then supervisor until 1965.
I married in 1963 and became the mother of a son and daughter while working in my first husband’s carpet business as a secretary until 1978. In 1979, following divorce I found employment as a secretary for a real estate office. In 1980, I accepted employment with the Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland. During 1981, bigger and better things came my way when I went to work at the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) as a legal secretary for the Deputy General Counsel.
I married Ed my wonderful husband in 1990. I also worked at a patent law firm Fleit, Jacobson, Cohn and Price in Washington, DC for more law experience while I was at NASA. I retired from NASA in September 2002. Working at NASA was special. I got to meet the astronauts when they came back from a launch and I would also fly down to the cape when there was a launch.
Since retiring I have not stopped. I volunteer at St. Mary’s hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland. I am the 1st Vice President and Membership Chair for NARFE (National Association Retired Federal Employees) of St. Mary’s county. I am in charge of membership for the county. I am involved in my church with teaching and various other things. In my spare time, I take quilting classes at the Senior Citizen Center near me.
